1998 Finest Centurions is a 20-card set that was issued as a base with a refractor parallel. This set has an appealing design. The etched background combined with the header text that appears to pop off the card really makes these cards stand out. The refractor parallel only emphasizes these striking features. I’ve always appreciated this set. It’s grown in popularity and value since I acquired my Frank Thomas all those years ago. That’s the trend with a lot of issues these days.
An unknown quantity of the base cards missing the serial numbers, that were initially designated as production scrap, made their way into the secondary market likely through backdoor means. These unnumbered cards were fraudulently serial numbered in an attempt to fool the market for profit. They can be identified by the flat gold serial numbering as the real cards have bright foil numbering. The three Mike Piazza cards in the following image are likely from this batch. There’s no other reason why three examples of the same card would contain the same serial numbering.
