1998 marked a pivotal year for the hobby. It’s the year when brand competition was at its peak. All brands were tying to out-market each other and as a result produced some of the most beautiful and coveted cards in the entire hobby.
One of the brands to thank for this is Skybox, who brought us the always impressive E-X line. 1998 E-X2001 was produced with two parallel sets, one of which being Essential Credentials Now. 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now parallels are unique in that card numbers correspond directly to print runs. For example, card #99 has a print run of 99. Card #50 has a print run of 50. Derek Jeter is card #7 in the set so his 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now parallel has a print run of 7.
The Derek Jeter market has been growing at a rapid pace over the past few years and given his 2020 Baseball Hall of Fame eligibility, it’s about to reach critical mass.
Cards in the 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now set with single-digit print runs are exceedingly rare. Their market appearances are often isolated instances. It may be many years before we see another of the 7 copies of the Derek Jeter if it even happens at all.
