The sales of the 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials and the 1998 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems Ryan Leaf cards highlight the attention these two popular sets bring even with famous NFL busts. It showcases that some buyers buy cards, not players. I appreciate that these two cards collected over 20 bids each and the 4-figure end price on the PMG was a nice touch. The 1998 PMGs have proven to be some of the most popular cards in the hobby so seeing this one bring this kind of attention wasn’t totally unsurprising and I expect the value to continue to grow with time.

While I didn’t bid on either of the examples depicted above, the following are my examples of these two cards. I picked up the 1998 Metal Universe Precious Metal Gems back in 2020 and for a fraction of the price. I acquired the 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials earlier this year for quite a bit less too. Since I haven’t yet scanned the EX Now, I took a quick pic to showcase it here. Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the ideal shine of this card in the pic, but you get the idea.
