Topps Definitive is a high end product with boxes priced at $2,000/ea. High end products like this typically require an equally high end quality screening process. However, something happened somewhere in the process chain that prevented this. Topps has been made aware of this card and has issued the following response.
It poses the question: What happened? Managing autographs for a large trading card manufacturer is likely a very big task with lots of responsibility.
Perhaps it was the case that the person in charge was pressed for deliverables not yet received and in an effort to meet timeline milestones, felt inclined to improvise. We don’t know.
What we do know is that this card, with fake autographs, is now a particularly collectable item with notoriety drawing serious attention to it.
