1993 Donruss Elite Dominators is a 20-card set that was issued exclusively through a television promotion. Between December 8-13, 1993 on the Shop at Home cable network, viewers were offered the opportunity to buy factory sealed series 1 and series 2 boxes of 1993 Donruss. Each box offered in this promotion contained one 1993 Donruss Elite Dominators card. These special boxes were sold for $99 + $6 for shipping. 5000 copies of each of the 20 cards was made for a total of 100,000 cards produced; all of which were purchased and promoted by the Shop at Home network. Don Mattingly, Nolan Ryan, Juan Gonzalez, and Paul Molitor each signed half of their 5000 cards, which means that 2500 of each signed or unsigned versions are available for each of those four players. Signed or unsigned, they all have stated print runs to 5000 copies. The four signed cards brings the master set to 24 cards.

Condition Sensitivity:
The following image shows how these cards were issued. This was a popular storage style for high-end trading cards in the early 1990s and people often left cards in these cases for many years. Over time, however, this type of storage can actually damage cards. Over time, temperature changes can cause the plastic to adhere to the card’s surface, which means that removing cards from these cases after they’ve been in them for so many years can risk damaging them. This is especially the case with cards containing foil printing like these 1993 Donruss Elite Dominators.
I put the card in a penny sleeve to protect it from the thick Lucite plastic, but these cards were placed raw between two screwdown slabs. What this means is that when removing them from these big screwdown cases, it’s common for some of the green prism printing to be stuck to the top half of the case effectively damaging the cards. This makes these cards incredibly condition sensitive. It’s very common to find these cards with some amount of green prism missing from the surface. Even the graded example shown above showcases this issue on the bottom right corner. I have a few copies of the Frank Thomas 1993 Donruss Elite Dominators and I can remember being pretty bummed when I removed the example from this case only to see this happen with that card. The one shown in the case below is a better example, but don’t be surprised to see some green prism missing from these cards. I kept this case, but the card is stored in a toploaded, which is what I recommend.
