Left-handed pitcher, Felix Doubront made his professional debut with the Boston Red Sox on June 18, 2010 as a replacement for Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was out with forearm strain.1 After a lackadaisical start despite a win, he was sent down to Pawtucket but re-emerged that July after Clay Buchholz entered the disabled list. Two more starts leading to an 0-2 streak led to an option but he returned to the Red Sox roster in August as a reliever.

With only 10.1 innings pitched, Doubront didn’t see much play time in 2011 but returned with a stronger presence in 2012.2 Despite unimpressive ERAs, Doubront experienced some success between 2012 and 2014 and helped the Boston Red Sox with Game 4 of the 2013 World Series. Performance inconsistencies would ultimately lead to a trade to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Marco Hernández. Due to injuries and performance issues, the Chicago Cubs released Doubront in March 2015.

Doubront made one professional appearance in July 2015 for the Toronto Blue Jays to pitch against the Detroit Tigers. Aside from that, between 2015 and 2016, he spent most of his time in the minor league systems for both the Toronto Blue Jays and the Oakland Athletics. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 causing him to miss the entire season.

On December 14, 2017, Felix Doubront signed a 1-year/$1M contract with the South Korea baseball club, the Lotte Giants.3 Doubront hasn’t made a professional appearance since 2015 and at the time of this writing is 30 years old.4 While the likelihood of a professional comeback is exceedingly low, he is enjoying baseball somewhere and in a lot of ways, that’s all that really matters.

This is another one of the many cases where the occurrence of reaching the majors is celebrated but only briefly. It’s also another reminder of who incredibly challenging it is to obtain success at such a high level. All too often, this seems more common the case with pitchers. For Felix Doubront, he’s still getting paid handsomely to execute his craft somewhere and that’s oftentimes all that’s needed to keep a guy happy.
