1991 Line Drive Mattingly is a 20-card set issued as a set in a retail Baseball Card Kit. The set was issued during Don Mattingly’s prime and commemorates different milestones of his career. As with many retail issues released at the time, “Limited Edition” was language used to prompt buyer urgency. Thing is, Limited is a very loose term and often isn’t accompanied by any specific print run. I’ve seen this term accompanied by print runs of 250,000, which is hardly limited. However, with junk wax era print runs into the many millions, I suppose one could consider a print run of a quarter million to be limited by comparison, but still, who really cares.

Buyers of the kit got the 20-card set, a Don Mattingly album, and a Don Mattingly story booklet. It’s a nice little run of Don Mattingly memorabilia for one price. While there’s no documented evidence of the release date SRP for this kit, I would feel at least partially confident in assuming it was around $14.99-19.99. This is only an estimate, however.

The set was issued by Impel, which distributed their products through mass-market retailers such as drug stores, discount chains, toy stores, department stores, and grocery/convenience stores. It’s not uncommon for hobby shops to buy retail products in bulk to sell in their stores at a markup. Impel was also known to sell through mail-order catalogs, gift shops, bookstores, and sports-merchandise outlets. This is a retail thing so, availability was through the usual suspects. The hanger hole and barcode further support the retail release format. It’s important here to note that Impel was the company behind the heavily overproduced Pro Set product lines that flourished during the sports card boom of the early 1990s.
