July 2022:
The Frank Thomas 2021 Topps Allen and Ginter Chrome Autographs Superfractor has moved around a lot over the past two months. On July 16, 2022, it sold at a BIN price of $599.
Superfractors are pumped out by the piles every year so I see them all the time. I love them but at $599, I think it’s a little high for a post-career Frank Thomas. I met the buyer at a local show shortly after this sale and congratulated him.
September 2022:
When I saw the listing a couple days before it sold, I thought it might bring about $450 at auction. The card was relisted auction style via COMC’s eBay account and it closed on September 9, 2022 with 26 bids at $423.10, which is pretty close to my initial valuation.
Almost immediately after the September sale, it was re-listed BIN via COMC’s eBay account for $1199.99, which is laughable. I saw the listing on eBay but was unsuccessful in my attempts to recover it. After doing some research, it appears that if an item sells direct via COMC, the eBay listing disappears. That said, here’s the direct COMC listing. Apparently, someone thought the card was worth nearly 3x the actual current market value.
October 2022:
On October 18, 2022, the card was listed on eBay again and this time with a BIN/OBO at $999.99. This indicates one of two things: The COMC listing was pulled by the owner, or an offer below the $1199.99 asking price was accepted. If the former, perhaps the owner thought they’d pull a bigger audience on the eBay platform. If the latter, the margin must have been wide enough for allowance of eBay fees and still make a profit on this third listing. Either way, someone clearly wants much more than the current market value of this card. However, with 1/1s, the market speaks when it sells at auction even with average SEO so it’s particularly unrealistic to expect the market to entertain a 136+% price hike.
November 2022:
This card was re-listed on eBay the following month and closed on November 27, 2022 18 bids at $415. We’re still within the expected current market value range of $350-450 for this particular card.
