Hi Patrick~
Very thorough review and most helpful at that. Thank you. I have a question to put to you on the ’85 Topps McGwire card. My copy complies with the front characteristics of an authentic card; however, the back is blank. Do you know of any such cards? The blank back is often done as a test run or proof. I just haven’t seen any as I’ve described. Let me know if you can shed some light on this and again, thanks for the detailed look at this seminal card. All the best, ~T.
Hi Tony,
I’m glad you enjoyed this article and found it helpful. Regarding your question about the blank back McGwire, authenticity is difficult to confirm with certainty. While legitimate blank backs are commonly found with cards from the late 1980s and early 1990s, I’ve seen fake blank backs of notable cards i.e., 1982T Ripken RC. For the Ripken card, however, it’s easy to spot as a fake due to the reduced print quality on the front of the card. Regarding your blank back McGwire, I recommend comparing its characteristics with those stated in this article. Specifically note the subtle yellow line along the jagged left edge of the name plate; those two features are only found on authentic examples.
