November 3, 2024: @waldorfstories posts an image of the Frank Thomas 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now on Instagram.

See the image. The serial number on this example is 02/08 and represents the second example I’ve ever seen. I sometimes wonder if any of the remaining examples are still sitting in packs. It’s my understanding that this card came from a much bigger collection that was on display at the March 14-16 Chicago Sports Spectacular.

March 14-16, 2025: Collection is Purchased at the Chicago Sports Spectacular

A big collection was purchased by @waldorfstories. While the Frank Thomas 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now was acquired back in November 2024. It came from a bigger collection that contained other important Frank Thomas cards. On March 15, I was notified of two of the other big Frank Thomas cards in the lot, but my replies didn’t receive any follow ups, so there was nothing I could do to get a deal done.

April 13, 2025: The Frank Thomas 1998 E-X2001 Essential Credentials Now is Traded for the 1997-98 Ultra Platinum Medallion set

@waldorfstories shares a video of the result of the trade. See it here. A set with a recorded sale of $100k gets traded for a mythic unicorn from 1998 of which only 8 copies exist. While I see comments published on social media about which side of the trade people think was the better end, I’m curious to know who got the better end of the trade in the long term. These are both incredible acquisitions, no doubt, but over the years, which would be considered the bigger item? Rhetorical, sure, but it’s certainly something worth pondering.
