2001 Donruss Elite Status parallels were issued with print runs corresponding directly to the players jersey number. Given that Cal Ripken Jr.’s jersey number is 8, just 8 copies of the Cal Ripken Jr. 2001 Donruss Elite Status parallel were made, which puts it in the super short print category and makes it incredibly rare and desirable. I watched this auction and while I knew it had strong potential to achieve high figures, I was surprised that it went well into the four-figure mark. Even with surprise, however, I expect this card to grow in value with time. I also think it’ll be a while before we see another one of these, so I figured it would be a good idea to chronicle its existence here. The holofoil shine combined with the die cut design in the shape of an S makes these cards quite beautiful. I’ve seen some of these 2001 Donruss Elite Status parallels in the wild over the years and I’m always floored by how stunning they are. They’re just very pretty cards.
