1996 Finest Landmark is a 4-card set issued as a set. Each card highlights a historic achievement or milestone associated with the featured player. As with similar bronze sets Topps issued around this time, cards design is comprised of thick metal-and-resin construction issued as a premium collectible rather than a standard pack-issued insert. Here’s why the following four players were included in the set:

  • Greg Maddux: Won four consecutive Cy Young Awards during the Braves’ dynasty era.
  • Albert Belle: The first player to reach 50 home runs and 50 doubles in a season.
  • Cal Ripken Jr.: Broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-games-played record.
  • Eddie Murray: Joined both exclusive 500-home-run and 3,000-hit clubs.

The 1996 Finest Landmark set had a small production run of just 2000 sets and limited distribution due to low fulfillment requests. It was issued as a direct-to-consumer (DTC) premium collectible offered by Topps. It was marketed like a limited-edition collectable rather than a traditional card set. Since many collectors focused on pack-issued cards, such as refractors, inserts, and other premium sets, and the 1996 Finest Landmark set was a separate mail-order product, it didn’t receive the same attention. The set was also considered relatively expensive. It’s for these reasons that the order fulfillment run was small. This is also why it remains an obscure and much rarer product than many of the most popular sets from the 1990s.

Time of Release:

While the set is sometimes cataloged as a 1995 issue due to its affiliation with the 1995 Finest set, it was actually released in 1996. Because Cal Ripken Jr. broke Lou Gehrig’s consecutive-game-played record in September of 1995, just before the end of the season, time would have had to pass for concept, production, marketing, and fulfillment of the Finest Landmark set. It’s also worth noting that surviving Topps invoices for Landmark cards show fulfillment dates in March and April of 1996. Finally, copyright data on the card’s reverse say 1996.
