Sammy Sosa 1990 White Sox Coke Baseball #23

Sammy Sosa 1990 White Sox Coke #23The 1990 White Sox Coke Sammy Sosa card was once a monster. My first memory of this card was right around 1998 during the prime of the famous Sosa/McGwire home run chase. That was a great year both for the hobby and baseball. Anyway, I can remember a collector piecing together all of Sammy Sosa's rookie cards and this was the last one he needed. He even shared a picture of it. I had never seen or known of this card until that, and at the time I thought I'd never own one of these because I just figured that due to its rarity and the way it was released, I wasn't gonna be able to afford it if I could find one. I didn't search for one of these until well after 1998. I talk about my first acquisition in Radicards video #45. There are two reasons why this card was once considered highly collectible:

  1. It was available in a full set that was only available as a stadium giveaway (SGA) at Comiskey Park in 1990.
  2. The 1998 home run chase.

I would be confident in assuming that this card passed well under the radar of a lot of collectors until 1998. Guys like me never even knew of its existence until that year as collectors were on the hunt for anything Sosa and this card was one of the more desirable. It was another 5 years before I realized Frank Thomas was featured in the same set.

In terms of demand, this card likely rivaled the 1989 Donruss Baseball's Best card, which was more common. The 1990 White Sox Coke Sammy Sosa was, however, likely the more important card among the two in that it was harder to find and wasn't released by one of the major licensed brands. To some, this makes this card more interesting. For me, I like the set and this card reminds me of an exciting time in baseball.
